Barack Obama races to lead the U.S.

We have seen Barack Obama on the news, in magazines, online, and have heard him on the radio. We have heard his numerous speeches over the last few months, stating what he would like to do if he becomes president. Three of these topics caught my attention:   poverty, education, and our homeland security.

Poverty is rising in the U.S. 37 million Americans are poor, and even when parents work full-time,  families are still below the federal poverty line.

Obama has plans to expand the access to jobs by improving transportation means, helping Americans climb the job ladder, and creating a program directly for the youth to strengthen their communities, while providing them with practical skills in the career field.

Consider someone you know whose family lives off paycheck to paycheck and still is barely making it. Someone whose family doesn’t get to have a hot meal on the table every night or get to go clothes shopping whenever they would like or even when they need to go. Obama could make a difference in those people’s lives.

Education is one of the most important things in a person’s life. Today, there are six million middle and high school students who read below their grade level. A high-quality teacher in every classroom is out of the question. Only 70 percent of U.S. high school students graduate with a diploma. Between 2001 and 2010, two million academically qualified students will not go to college because they can’t afford it.

Even though I only have a year and a half left of high school, I would like for there to be teachers I know that can provide me with the best education and to see all my fellow classmates get a diploma.

Obama has been a leader on educational issues throughout his career. Obama plans on providing sufficient funding to schools across America. He wants to reward, prepare, and retain teachers so there is a guarantee that they will give each of us the best education there is. He could change the way education is today.

After what our country went through with 9/11, today the U.S is still unprepared for another terrorist attack. The recommendations have been underfunded and ignored.

Obama is part of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and has supported efforts to base homeland security spending on risks. He has introduced legislation to strengthen chemical plant and drinking water security, and to enhance disaster preparedness.

Obama plans to protect our chemical plans. He has established a clear set of federal regulations that all plants must follow. Obama wants to create a plan for evacuating special needs population in emergencies, instead of putting people at risk for being stranded and not being cared for properly. He also wants to create a centralized, federal database to allow individuals lost during an emergency to call a phone number or go to one website and post their location and condition. Family members would also be able to use this to check the status of missing loved ones. With this type of security, everyone can feel at ease to know that America has a plan in case something like 9/11 happens again.

In conclusion, Obama has a good mind set for America. He could provide many great things for everyone in different ways.
